The Bedford Police Department (in partnership with the Bedford County Chamber Foundation) will present their “National Night Out” Program between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, August 1, 2017. This event is sponsored by First National Bank. To ensure event participants’ safety, Juliana Street (between Penn Street and Pitt Street) will be closed to all traffic between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Vehicle operators should take extra precaution when driving near the aforementioned area.

Mayoral Proclamation – Rick Smith, 2017 Citizen of the Year

MAYORAL PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS,
Rick Smith, graduate of Chestnut Ridge High School and the University of Pittsburgh, resides in Bedford along with his wife of 41 years, Judy. Smith and his wife have two adult children, Bradley and Adam, and two grand-daughters, Alaina and Caitlin. Rick Smith has a history of selflessly serving the public and is always willing to lend a hand and give back to the community. Rick worked for Frontier Communications in Breezewood for 30 years before taking on the role of Executive Director for United Way in 2009. As Executive Director, he helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars by creating a series of fundraisers and community service projects. Mr. Smith coordinated and dispersed funds to many agencies knowing it was making a difference for many people; and

WHEREAS,
In June of this year he took the position as Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce. Rick also serves as the facilitator for the Chamber’s Leadership Bedford County and is an active member of the Bedford Lions Club where he has served as president and chairs several committees. Rick is also a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and a leader at Trinity Lutheran Church where he has served as president of church council. Smith serves as second vice president of the Egolf Park Association, the board secretary for the Salvation Army Bedford Unit and local board chairman for the emergency food/shelter program; and

WHEREAS,
His selection as Citizen of the Year stems from his leadership in the community
and the resources that he brings to the many boards that he serves on; and

WHEREAS,
Rick Smith, by his support of our community as well as generously and selflessly giving of his time, exemplifies the Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self”
and the Elk’s motto “Elks Share, Elks Care.”

THEREFORE,
I, the Mayor of the Borough of Bedford, declare and proclaim, Monday, July 24th to be “Rick Smith Day” in the Borough of Bedford.

Due to inclement weather, the water line repair on W. Pitt Street has been rescheduled for Friday, July 7, 2017.

Beginning at approximately 8:00 a.m. and continuing until late afternoon on Friday, July 7, 2017; water service on W. Pitt Street (from West Street to Chamberlain Street) will be temporarily discontinued to facilitate a water line repair.

Customers in the aforementioned areas are advised to disconnect the power from hot water heaters and may also wish to close the water line valves located near their water meters to lessen the chance of water being pulled from their houses. Customers in the affected area may experience periods of discolored water and air in their water lines once service is restored.

The County Communications Center will be notified when the work is completed.
